2005 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
- FIRST TIME CHAMPIONS HIGHLIGHT OPEN EVENTS
- COLLIGNON DOMINATES CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY
-
Tremendous performances from the sport's two biggest stars and several first time winners highlighted the recent 2005 USTSA World Championships, held this past Labor Day weekend at the DFW Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas, Texas. This year's event offered players a revised format that featured both "Open" and "Championship" events. In the five Open events four new names were added to the list of major world champions, while the two Championship events, which featured the sport's top competitors and a handful of qualifiers, were again dominated by the most famous names in the world of foosball.
For the first time since 1998, the Open events at the World Championships featured first-time winners in four of the five individual competitions. At that worlds event in Fort Worth seven years ago, Don Swan, Maggie Strong, Kathy Richey and Melanee Tosh, and Frederic Collignon all won their first world titles. At this year's Texas event, Billy Pappas, Tom Yore, Fernando Rosa and Stacey Fowler joined the exclusive list of world foosball champions with victories in each of their respective open events.
Pappas overcame the great Collignon to claim the Open Singles title, while Yore and Louis Cartwright outlasted Pappas and Trevor Park to win one of the grittiest and hard-fought Open Doubles finals in World Championship history. Rosa and partner Moya Tielens won the Mixed Doubles event in a final match battle that went right down to the last ball, and Stayce Fowler avenged a 2004 worlds loss to Cindy Head to earn the Women's Singles final.
In the Open Singles event, Pappas, who has electrified the pro tour with his play during the 2005 season, earned his first world title with a thrilling final match performance against the great Frederic Collignon. Coming off a productive National Championship appearance that saw him win three major titles, Billy claimed the winner's side of the bracket in two games against Collignon, 5-4, and 5-4, to advance to his second career world final. The always dangerous Collignon then moved to the loser's side and defeated 2003 world champ Tony Spredeman in two games, to advance to his 17th career world final. In the championship match, Pappas continued his spectacular run, using his potent "walking-snake" series and lethal 2-row to defeat Fredrico and win his first world title in five well-played and entertaining games, 5-4, 4-5, 5-1, 5-4, and 5-3.
In Open Doubles, Florida's Tom Yore paired with 5-time world finalist Louis Cartwright to come from the loser's bracket and win the title in a grueling ten game battle that must go down as one of the most compelling final matches of recent pro tour seasons. Yore and Cartwright had fought their way back to the final after a winner's bracket final loss to 2005 national champs Billy Pappas and Trevor Park. Tom and Louis had then defeated 2004 world finalists Tony Spredeman and Bob Diaz to advance to the championship final and a rematch with Pappas and Park. With Cartwrighty using his highly effective, "speed-shuffle" style of snake defense and the great pull-shooting of Yore, Tom and Louis pulled out a close first set, winning 5-4 in the fifth game, and then won an equally close second set, also in five games to earn the 2005 Open title. The victory represented the second career world win for Cartwright, the 1996 singles champ, while Yore joined singles winner Pappas as first time world victors.
Talented California forward Fernando Rosa and five-time world champion Moya Tielens teamed up to earn the Open Mixed Doubles title in Dallas, in a tough comeback performance. In one of the year's most closely-contested major finals, Fernando and Moya outlasted Dave Gummeson and Lotus Chesborough to win a thrilling two set championship match that wasnt decided until the final ball of the final game. Rosa and Tielens won the opening set in three straight games and then held off the high scoring Gummeson and Chesborough to win 5-4 in the fifth and deciding game of the second set. It was Rosa's first career worlds victory and third win overall, and the win was Moya Tielens' first ever playing the goalie position.
In the competitive Open Women's events, Moya Tielens and Joy Steward became the first lady team to ever win three straight World Women's Doubles titles on the Tornado pro tour. For Moya, who had combined with Laurette Barton to earn the title back in 2002, the win actually made it four years in a row that she had earned world doubles honors. In the championship final Moya and Joy faced 36-time world champion Cindy Head and her partner Dawn Duquette, a Semi Pro who was competitng in her first world final. With Moya utilizing her remarkable forward skills Tielens and Steward won the first game, 5-4. In game two, Moya again dominated the center of the table and continued to shoot with exquisite precision to lead her team to a 5-4 win, and another world doubles title.
At last year's World Championship event, Iowa's Stayce Fowler had battled her way to the Women's Singles final only to fall one match short, losing in 2 games to Cindy Head, who again won the title at the Texas event. At the 2005 Dallas event, Stayce, who had earned two previous major titles on the pro tour, won the winner's bracket and entered the final match hoping to add a world title to her growing list of achievements. Fowler then used her solid 5-row and intelligent snake shot to avenge that 2004 loss and defeat Cindy in a remarkable singles final performance that saw her fall behind early, and then hold on for dear life as the match nearly slipped away. Fowler lost the first game of the final to Head, 5-3, but then won the next 2 games, 5-4, and 5-3, to add her name to the list of 2005 first-time winners.
Belgian foosball icon Frederic Collignon again asserted himself as perhaps the greatest foosball player ever with yet another in a long series of great World Championship performances. Collignon, who has "tripled" three different times at the Worlds, won both of the exclusive Championship titles in Dallas, as he continued his move toward the top of the all time world championship list. Frederico won his fifth career world singles championship and earned a seventh doubles title, all within in the past 8 years with partner Todd Loffredo. The wins were the 15th and 16th of Frederico's worlds career, placing him 4 victories behind the 20 of his partner Loffredo, who holds the all time record for male players. Fredrico defeated 4-time world champ Tommy Adkisson in three games to claim the singles title, and then swept Open Doubles winners Yore and Cartwright to again claim Championship Doubles honors . Remarkably Collignons two wins made it the fifth time in the past seven years that he had at least doubled at the Dallas worlds event, a record that may never be broken...at least not until next year.

2005 INSIDE FOOS PLAYER AWARDS...
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Billy Pappas, Massachusetts. 20-year-old Pappas earned four major 2005 titles including Open Singles at the World Championships. Billy also finished second in Open Doubles in Dallas and "tripled" in overwhelming fashion at the Chicago Nationals, winning Doubles, Singles, and Mixed Doubles. Billy's 2005 season also included multiple wins at the Kentucky and Utah State Championships, and a second straight triple at the Texas State Championships.
LADY PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Moya Tielens, Canada. Won 4th straight world doubles title and also added her first world mixed title, her first tour win playing the goalie position. Four major wins overall during the 2005 major tour season for this all time great lady forward.
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: Rob Atha, United Kingdom. Atha earned 3 Pro event wins in 2005, including both titles in Dallas. Robert also finished 3rd in Open Mixed in Las Vegas, 7th in Championship Doubles and 9th in Open Singles at the Worlds.
COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Fernando Rosa, California. After experiencing physical problems the last couple of seasons, Rosa returned for the 2005 World Championships and won Mixed Doubles and the Wednesday DYP while finishing 4th in both Championship Doubles and Open Singles.
TOP PRO PLAYER: Rob Atha. This talented British player is definitely "upwardly mobile". After a succesful 2005 season, Atha should really begin to have a major impact on the American foosball tour in '06. Rob narrowly finished ahead of Californian Adam Gilson in this category. Adam also won three 2005 Pro titles, one at each tour stop. He won Doubles in Las Vegas with Mark Torres (defeating Atha and Laszlo Teke in the final) and won Singles at the Nationals. He earned his third 2005 title with Atha in Doubles at the Worlds.
TOP SEMI PRO MALE: Kevin Walker, New York. Kevin, a pull shooter, won Semi Pro Singles at the International and National Championships, and finished 2nd in Pro Singles at Nationals. He also placed 5th in Championship Singles at Worlds. Walker is definitely a player to keep an eye on.Other Semi Pros receiving consideration included Ron Olson of Michigan, who teamed with Jeff Kimmerling to win Semi Pro Doubles in Dallas. Ron and Jeff also upset several top Pro Master teams in route to a remarkable 5th place finish in Open Doubles. Olson also placed 4th in Pro Singles at the Worlds and won the FSO title in Vegas back in March. Montana's Jeffrey Pipkin, Jr., who was in two National finals and won Semi Pro Mixed at the Worlds, was also in the running for top Semi Pro honors.
TOP SEMI PRO FEMALE: Dawn Duquette, Colorado. She earned both Semi Pro/Amateur and Open Women's Doubles honors in Las Vegas and finished 2nd in the World Women's Doubles event with Cindy Head. Dawn also finished 9th at Worlds in Open Women's Singles. Also considered: Melissa Kegg, who won the National Mixed title with Pappas, World Semi Pro Mixed champ Keisha Rue, and National Women's Doubles winner Tommie Bagley.
TOP AMATEUR MALE: Ryan Moore, Kentucky. Won Amateur Doubles and Singles in Las Vegas, Amateur Singles, 35/17, and 17 and Under at Worlds. Moore is a gifted and competitive young player who should be able to continue his steady climb up the ratings list. Also Considered: Kane Gabriel, William Haberman.
TOP AMATEUR FEMALE: Rochelle Mandin, Washington. Won 3 titles: Amateur Women's Singles and Doubles at the Worlds, and Amateur Women's Doubles in Las Vegas. Also Considered: Nicole Wiegand, Kristin Grogan, and Michelle Atkins.
MATCH OF THE YEAR: Pappas/Park vs. Collignon/Loffredo in Las Vegas. In this amazing match at the International Championships, Billy Pappas didn't miss from his 3-row until the fourth game, and shot 18 for 21 for the match. But despite Billy's brilliance, Collignon made 9 of his last 11 "euro-pins" to win this incredible showdown 5-4 in the fifth game.
PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR: Billy Pappas at the Nationals. Pappas won all three major titles in a brilliant all around performance in Chicago.Pappas won his first-ever major title with Melissa Kegg in Mixed Doubles, and followed that up with dominating victories in Championship Singles and Doubles, paired with Trevor Park.

INSIDE THE PRO TOUR...
Notes From The Foos World...
Congrats to all the big winners, pro and non-pro alike, who struck foos-gold in Dallas...
Fernando Rosa, who has always had an extremely high quality game and can be very intimidating on the table, was spectacular in the Mixed Doubles event...
Fernando and partner Moya Tielens won the first set of the finals in three straight games and then held off a hard-charging Dave Gummeson and Lotus Chesborough to win on the match's final ball...
Rosa used both his Snake and Pull Shot throughout the weekend to earn three major top-4 results, while also winning the Wednesday Night DYP with Texas veteran Scott Moreland...
Yes, Scott is the father of Pro Master and two-time Texas State champion Brandon Moreland...
The elder Moreland won the world mixed title on the Tornado table way back in 1974 and 1975...
Frederic Collignon again demonstrated that he is truly The Man, with his two latest world titles coming without losing a single game in either of the Championship finals...
In those Monday afternoon event finals, Collignon decisively won all six games that he played, and outscored his opponents by a combined total of 30 to15...
Of course partner Loffredo helped out in doubles where he and Collignon bested weary Open Doubles winners Tom Yore and Louis Cartwright 5-1, 5-2, and 5-2 in the final...
Yore and Cartwright didn't seem to have much left in the tank in the Championship event final after battling Pappas and Park in a draining two-set Open Doubles final the previous day...
Tom Yore played tremendous foosbal lall weekend long, and seemed to make all the big shots at the most crucial times...
Yore's defense in the final against Pappas's 5-row was also a primary factor in contributing to his team's win...
THE BEST? After watching Louis Cartwright again dominate pin-shooters defensively, while consistently scoring from his 2-rod and playing his usual brand of intelligent foosball, I must say that, in my view, there may not be a better goalie currently playing anywhere...
Billy Pappas proved in the Open Singles event that Frederico is not completely unbeatable, defeating the brilliant Belgian in both the winner's bracket and championship finals...
TRIVIA TIME: What current Pro Master player has won the most Mixed Doubles titles on the major pro tour?
I don't know anyone who wasn't happy for Cedar Rapids, Iowa Pro Master Stayce Fowler after her emotional win over the great Cindy Head in the Women's Singles final...
Stayce controlled the tempo of the match throughout, and remained poised despite the potentially intimidating charge of the fiery (and very vocal) Ms. Head...
After losing game one, Fowler narrowly held on to win the second game 5-4 (after leading 4-1), and then withstood another late charge by Head to seal the deal with a solid 5-3 third game win...
During each timeout, and between games, Stayce referred to a written list of "things to remember", and apparently followed that list to a "T" to earn her first world title in a very impressive performance...
Moya Tielens made it seven career world wins with her two victories in Dallas...
Moya, who may be on her way to becoming the best lady forward in the sport's history, has won at least one major title at 11 of the past 12 Tornado tour stops...
Tielens also showed that she could play the goalie position with remarkable skill, scoring five times in the Mixed Doubles final, while doing an admirable defensive job against future hall of fame forward Dave Gummeson...
TRIVIA ANSWER: Terry Moore, who has won a remarkable 18 major mixed titles, with 7 different partners, since first entering the winner's circle back in 1992...
Congratulations also to all of the players who qualified in Dallas to play for the US team at the upcoming ITSF World event in St. Vincent, Italy...
Billy Pappas, Tony Spredeman, Rob Mares, Stayce Fowler, and Dusty Bambenek will all be making the trip this October 28-30 and should perform very well at this event which is played on five different types of table...
Go to http://www.table-soccer.org/event_schedule.htm for more information...
As many of you know, both major 2006 USTSA evemts will be held in Las Vegas at the Riviera Hotel and Casino....
The International Championships and VIFA League Championships will take place next March 22-26, and the Tornado World Championships will run September 20-25...
The guys at the top have been meeting to decide on event structuring, and will be releasing complete information in the next Table Talk Magazine, which is due out in 2-3 weeks...
If you have questions or comments on anything foos-related please email info@insidefoos.com...
