UK Garlando Masters Foosball Championships

(Warmup event to the Garlando World Championships)

10 July 2004 - Queen Mary's Sport's and Social Club, Sutton Road,Walsall, WS1 2PG

The British Foosball Association (BFA - www.britfoos.com) is organising the UK Garlando Championships at Queen Mary's Sport's and Social Club in Walsall on 10 July 2004. The is an elite event and will attract the top Foosball (aka Table Football, Babyfoot, Table Soccer) players in the country and act as a warm up event for the UK team that is going to the World Championships in Austria later in the month (24 July - 1 August).

In addition to the main events the BFA is hosting a visitors event that is free for all to enter. Depending on numbers the visitors event will be either singles format or DYP (draw-your-partner where players are paired randomly). Registration opens at 3:30pm and the event is expected to last 2-3 hours. Visitors will also get the opportunity to see the top players in action and possibly even get to play some on the practice tables available.

Peter Lawrenson, the Saddlers matchday commentator, is also the Regional Organiser for The BFA said, “This is one of the major events in the BFA calendar and should be a great competition. It is especially important for those players going to the World Championships because this competition is using exactly the same specification tables as those at the ‘World’s’ in two weeks time. It is excellent preparation for them to go and compete at the higher level.

Peter added, “Also, if enough Saddlers fans are attracted to play in the Visitor’s event, I would like to help organise a Saddlers Foosball team who could play against visiting fans before Coca-Cola Football League One matches.”

Foosball is well established in the UK as a competition sport, with regular tournaments, a national ranking system and a well established competitor base. The UK no1 player is 18 year old Rob Atha, who has won several world championship titles and who has already won tens of thousands of pounds at competitions. The game is immensely skilful, requiring dedicated practice and lightening reactions. The range of skills available to the top players needs to be seen to be comprehended, and people will be amazed at quite what is possible.
